It's no secret that in order to do your best as a student, you're going to need to have access to certain technology. Unfortunately, a lot of those items come with a hefty price tag. Many students simply cannot afford to fund their education.


Thankfully, there are so many resources out there for discounted and even free laptops for college students. We've rounded up all the ways you can get your hands on everything you need in order to succeed.

What is a free laptop program?


Free laptop programs, just like the name says, give students computers at no charge. Colleges and different groups usually pay for these programs to help students do well in school.


But, to get into most programs, you usually have to be enrolled at least part-time at a four-year university.


Which colleges give free laptops?


Surprisingly, a lot of colleges offer some kind of free laptop program. 


If you're looking for specific schools, head over to their IT Department website. That's where you'll likely find out what the requirements for the program are.


But below are a few of the schools offering free laptops for college students:

Moravian University

Moravian provides each incoming undergraduate student with an Apple MacBook Pro and iPad, plus an Apple Pencil; since fall 2024, it adds an Apple Watch. These devices belong to the student after graduation.

Full Sail University 

Full Sail’s Project LaunchBox continues to provide a laptop computer and required software so that students can work anywhere.

Bowdoin College

Through the Digital Excellence Commitment (DExC), Bowdoin College gives students a 13-inch MacBook Pro, an Ipad mini, and an Apple Pencil — all equipped with the necessary software.

Organizations that give out free laptops


If your school doesn't offer a free laptop program, you still have options. Various nonprofits also help students obtain the tech they need for college.

The On It Foundation

Operates nationally and donates free computers to K‑12 students from low‑income families receiving free or reduced lunch. The charity also provides STEM training and has been doing so for 25 years.

Computers With Causes

Continues to run a Free Computer Program providing refurbished laptops to students, teachers, veterans and other individuals. Applicants fill in forms and, after a needs assessment and background check, may receive a computer. Demand remains high, so responses can take weeks.

Human‑I‑T, Compudopt and other digital inclusion non‑profits

Large corporations partner with these groups to distribute free devices. For instance, AT&T reports working with Compudopt and Human‑I‑T to distribute more than 122 000 computers and Wi‑Fi hotspots to students and families since 2021.

City & government initiatives (new)

In September 2025 New York City announced a program to distribute 350 000 LTE/5G‑connected Chromebooks to K‑12 students during the 2025–26 school year. These devices are free and come with internet service to close the digital divide.

Scholarships & grants for free laptops


If you're a high school student or soon-to-be college student, there are grants and scholarships available to you, too.

Dell Scholars Program

The Dell Scholars scholarship offers $20 000 for college costs plus a free laptop and textbook credits. Eligibility requires participation in a college‑readiness program, Pell Grant eligibility and a 2.4 GPA.

Laptops 4 Learning

The organisation has shifted to selling discounted refurbished laptops rather than giving them away. As of early 2026, Chromebooks cost $115 plus shipping and Windows laptops start at $215 (8 GB RAM) or $255 (16 GB RAM), each with a one‑year warranty. Students and military veterans may apply; the group also hosts fundraising events.

Other scholarships

A few private scholarships still provide laptop bundles (e.g., some state‑sponsored or corporate awards). However, such offers frequently change, so students should always review the current benefits.
