Over three quarters of British people now support same-sex marriage.

It's been ten years since same-sex marriage became legal in England and Wales in July 2013. While it's still pretty shocking that it was considered illegal in the years before, it looks like more and more people are becoming open-minded and accepting.

Scotland legalised same-sex marriages in 2014, and Northern Ireland only made the step in January 2020.

Research by YouGov has shown that 78% of British people are now supporting same-sex unions. FYI: that's the highest figure YouGov has ever recorded! Hopefully we'll see this number rise within the next few years, too.

Three quarters of those surveyed also said they believe same-sex relationships are equally as valid as opposite-sex relationships. This number has increased from 62% when the same question was asked back in 2012.

Back in 2011 when YouGov started to track opinions on same-sex marriage, only around four in ten people supported it. At that time, 28% of the people surveyed said they supported civil partnerships but not same-sex marriage.

It's great to see that the country has become more accepting over the last decade, but there's still a long way to go until the LGBTQIA+ community are given the rights they deserve and the safety they need in society.
