Bills, boilers and “who left the heating on?”
As temperatures drop, questions about energy bills rise. Let’s be honest – few things test a student friendship like asking “who turned the heating on again?” From endless kettle reboils to that one mate who lives in a hoody indoors but insists the radiators stay on – bill chat can get awkward.
While some student homes opt for “unlimited energy” deals (a fixed monthly fee for all usage), many are finding these can cost up to £2,200 more per household than traditional contracts. The key? Finding a plan that fits your budget and your lifestyle.
Just remember: saving money shouldn’t come at the expense of your comfort or wellbeing – especially when you already have assignments and exams to worry about. The good news? EDF is a trusted provider who wants energy to work for you – for the long-term.
Why EDF is a smart choice for students

Is it your first time sorting out the electricity bill?
If you’ve just moved into your first student house, the world of tariffs, meter readings and standing charges can be confusing. Here’s a quick crash course to get you started:
What’s a tariff?
A tariff is simply the rate you pay for energy. EDF offers both fixed and variable tariffs, so you can pick the one that best fits your budget.
What’s the difference between EDF’s Simply Fixed and Simply Tracker tariffs?
Every three months, the government’s energy regulator, Ofgem, reviews the energy price cap. This means your prices can go up or down each quarter of the year if you’re on a variable energy tariff. For peace of mind and to help you save, EDF offer both fixed and tracker tariffs.
With Simply Fixed your unit rates and standing charge won’t change for the length of your tariff. Whereas with Simply Tracker, you’ll always pay below the government price cap. You’re guaranteed to pay £50 less than EDF’s Standard Variable tariff over the year if you’re on a dual fuel tariff, or £25 less a year if you’re on a single fuel tariff.
Own an electric vehicle (EV)? You might prefer EDF’s EV trackertariff, Evolve, or their fixed EV tariff, GoElectric. There’s also their Pod Point Plug & Power tariff which is a fixed tariff and charger bundle to help you start your EV journey
How do I take a meter reading?
This depends on what type of meter your home has. You can find out more in EDF’s help centre.
Can students switch energy providers?
Usually, yes! Typically renters can choose their own energy providers but you might want to double check with your landlord first. Switching could save you a lot over the year, so it’s definitely worth exploring.

Need extra support with your energy bills?
EDF knows that everyone’s situation is different – and sometimes, you might need a bit of extra help. If you’re struggling to keep up with bills or managing on a low income, there’s support available.
Students with an active EDF account who might be considered vulnerable (for example, due to health, income or personal circumstances) can sign up to EDF’s Priority Services Register. Once registered, you’ll get a welcome pack explaining the different ways EDF can support you.
If you’re finding it tough financially, EDF can also refer you to Citizens Advice Plymouth for free debt advice, and in some cases, to their Customer Support Fund –which offers grants to help pay off energy debt for those who are eligible.
Every situation is different, but the main thing to know is this: help is there if you need it – so if you become a customer, don’t hesitate to reach out and see what you might qualify for.
